DAY 3!

DAY 3
(matt)

We woke up early at caught our plane to Kauai (The Garden Island).

We went to get our rental car... which Traci hooked us up with... and i texted her and told her that the Hertz told us we were not GOLD members and that non-gold members only got to drive mopeds and scooters.....  i got a few frantic text messages and a missed call or two from Traci... who was ready to call the Hertz place and lay the smack down.... i told her "how are we gonna strap our luggage to a scooter???"  ... then i sent her this pic:
.......  Traci, i know you've always wanted a big brother to pull pranks on you!!!!!!  And thank you.... this car is sweeeeeet!!

We traveled up the Eastern coast of the island toward the first of our 2 stays on Kuaui.  And there are some breathtaking views of the coast. We stopped to play in the water a bit:

We kept heading north on the east coast and came upon and park/ river trail... took a couple pics, but decided to save that adventure for another day:

This is literally 10 feet from our back porch... not mad at all!!!!:

After that, we kept on going up the coast and found our stay, and our own secluded beach!!!!

We drove past the mountain valley... and got to see where 50% of the United States coffee is grown:
Our bellies rumblin'... we decided to go find food... and just happened to stumble onto a Luau after we overheard some people talking about one next door to where we had ordered our Mai Tais.  It was "reservations only"... but i sweet talked the lady at the door to let the honeymoon couple in and she said "absolutely"... nicely done!!!!  We were treated to a fresh pig roast, chicken, and a lot of native foods that were delish!!!  (purple potato-things, some sort of grape that you peel a shell off of, and coconut milk pudding, and some POI).  We got to hear Hawaiian music and dance, fire dancing and Hula dancing... all while drinking countless Mai Tais and being introduced to the crowd as the honeymoon couple.  This was all at a place call Tahiti Nui... which we found out has been a few movie films, including "the Descendents". All-in-all.... it was an unforgettable Luau.

Uncovering the piggy that's been cooking in lava rocks and banana leaves, and covered in 8 layers of burlap for 6 hours!

slicing up fresh pig and handing out samples to eager mouths!!!

i cut my head off... but wanted to get the Hawaiian singer in the background.

Native Hula dancers and songs.
